The default for either network retries or modem retries (I forget which, big surprise) is 2 minutes. If there is a communications problem with the machine (asking for exponents but not receiving them for some reason), that would explain the timing. Also, if the machine is running unattended and no one is checking the account status, then it could go on for a very long time.
