I have no idea how something like this might be implemented but it might be an idea to have all new posts in the forum compacted in a digest form and posted to the list daily or even weekly.
Also, it would be nice if one could post on the forum via email - but I guess that would be hard. I'm just proposing this as this would eliminate most of the complaints people hav have about the forum vs. list.
