It was something I had to workaround to come up with the fix for the
rendering issue you saw (fixed with the vbo/ changes).  Luckily
always_flush_batch=true is a good tool for avoiding a large class of
GPU-hang-or-bad-rendering failures that let me separate the two
problems.
