The whole point of this was to avoid the requirement of rebuilding with different configure arguments, so that all the 32-bit libraries can be treated the same way (just repacking) for the multiarch ia32-libs package. As for --with-dri-searchpath, I think that can be handled without too many changes to the build system. If you're sure you'd like it that way, I can come up with a patch to make it that way.
