Not sure it's a MacOS 9 thing, my experience is:
- desktop G3/300 running MacOS 8.6 - OK
- PowerBook G3/333 running MacOS 8.6 - FAIL
- iMac 350 running MacOS 9 - OK
- PC running Win 98 - OK
So, not necessarily MacOS 9?!
