Thanks to all of your helpful responses, I've now got it working.  I 
appreciate Sjoerd's suggestion as to how I could have pin-pointed the 
problem myself by using

  answer file "Show me the file."
  answer it && return && the result

to discover that the variable "it" did not contain what I thought it 
would.  I don't want to belabour this, and perhaps I'm just dense, but 
the MetaCard Reference does state that

     "The local variable 'it' is set to the name of the button the user 
clicked on."

     That's why I originally looked to the variable "it" to see whether 
the "Cancel" button had been clicked in my use of Answer File.  Also, 
"it" works fine when using the plain Answer command.
