What sorts of things are you doing with it, if you don't mind
telling? My initial plans are very basic, things that are freely
available via my webhost CGI. But if the initial trials are a
success, I'd love to dig into it deeper and perhaps automate several
time consuming web tasks :-)

Try the one at ftp.metacard.com. It's engine v2.5, and most of the
new features since then have been for things like native appearances
and such that don't affect CGI use anyway.
I have that BSD engine running on my servers for years, and have
never bothered updating it, never saw a need....
