The problem with small communities is that *everyone* has a conflict of
interest to some degree. Either you know nothing about the topic and
shouldn't be writing about it, or you know or at least recognize a
significant number of people involved and COI results. I know all the
reviewers for my papers, and vice versa. The best you can hope for is to
try to be objective and don't be too picky about claiming COI from the more
tenuous connections, because otherwise you won't get anything done.
