Well put Mark. I don't know how one could improve on that answer.
I'm going to record that somewhere for future reference.

Something like
- Because it meets some or all of the criteria that have been
established over many decades to indicate it is of meteoritic
origin. Such as having a fusion crust, possible presence of
Nickel, and chemical or physical structure that places it amongst
the other rocks of identical composition (and thus origin).
Following on from that what about the reasons people give for their
beloved meteor-wrong still being a meteorite?
But...
It's like really heavy for its size...
Its smells of burning..
I saw it land just over the hill..
Because it cost me like £50/g...
Because it had a certificate and everything...
Because a bloke in my geology class said it was...
It has melting all over it..
It's a brown rock..
Best,
Mark Ford

Dear List Member,
I would like to hear your most convincing response to
the layman's question, "How do you know it's a
meteorite"?
My best,
Thomas
