I haven't caught up on the backlog of email, so apologies if someone has 
already mentioned The Monolith Monsters.

Not a bad intro, considering it was done in 1957.
 
Gathered meteorites turn the finders into stone overnight, and if they contact 
water the grow into.....MONOLITH MONSTERS!
 
 
Also worthy of note, but not quite meteorites, is Day of the Triffids.
A fantastic bright green meteor shower blinds almost all on the planet.
