To say it's a sc-fi action thriller doesn't do the 334 pages justice - it's one of those tales that has you turning the pages despite yourself. Brother and sister Robert and Sarah are on a flight to Melbourne when there is a meteorite strike that brings with it a coma-inducing virus. It leaves most adults in a deep sleep, but the siblings, in common with other youngsters, appear to be unaffected. Not only that, but they all have super powers that bring them to the attention of an organisation that claims it is looking for a cure. It soon emerges that the Colonel in charge is trying to use their powers as weapons. It is a fast-paced adventure in which you quickly form attachments with the main characters who are predominantly children or teenagers. The adults who feature in the plot are few in number and almost incidental, with the Colonel quickly emerging as the "baddie" and the children's father, Daniel, triumphing over the odds a bit like Indiana Jones. It was easy to visualise the battle sequences so accustomed are we to televised action thrillers of the same ilk. Meteorite Strike (£5.99, Usborne) was written by AG Taylor who got the idea for it after a flight across Australia. He was born in New Zealand, but grew up in Norfolk. He studied English Literature at Sheffield before going on to take a teaching course at Cambridge University.
