of course it is possible. But I would not recommend it. You can lyse them like this for at least 20 min (actually dependent on your volume) under constant ice cooling. But this method is not the most effective.

I don't know if it makes sense in your case but you might want to inform yourself about French Press or cell cracker.

I'm looking to lyse E. coli cells in order to extract total protein from it
for downstream processing and testing. One idea that came up was to use
sonication so that we don't damage the protein - is this recommended? Also,
if it is, do you have any recommendations on where to find protocols for
