It used to be for pption of nucleic acids, in the days before polymin P. Usually an Ammonium Sulphate step followed or one just through everything left on say a phosphocellulose column (I was purifying RE's or DNA modifying enzymes 30 years ago!) and the streptomycin passed straight through.
