Sorry, I wrongly assumed that since the first operation was done on a lathe, that the subsequent operation would be done on a lathe also.   Daryl ----- Original Message ----- From: Jon Baker To: Daryl Hatch ; SmartCAM Tech Group Sent: Thursday, December 07, 2000 11:31 AM Subject: Re: [mfg-smartcam] tapered layers for material     Perhaps I didn't explain it properly for you.  The part is held in a horizontal fashion, like held in a 4th axis on the table, parrallel to the X-axis.  If I set a circle on the Y-Z plane, with its level at, say -2.0 and Prof top at 0, it comes out as a nice round piece of stock when selecting that profile as the stock layer in show cut.  However, if I want that nice round bar to instead be tapered, like a morse taper lets say, there is no way to create that stock as a tapered round in showcut.          As to the other methods, yes, I do use an approximation by multiple copies around the X-axis for a rough looking blank, or using phantom tools to "pre-machine" the stock as needed.  But there are always the times I want to zoom in, or rotate the part around to double check some clearance, and then I have to go back to the beginning and phantom cut it for each view.  I was just wondering if there was a betterway.  Sure wish it would take surfaces or meshes as the stock level.  Oh well, I am sure that was scheduled for release 12 or 13.  :o( Thanks to all that responded. Then trim it, chain it, and it should give you what you want when you enter that layer number (1, in this case) in the Stock Layer field of the show cut menu.   Daryl
