Your right Mike, the calculations were
off. I'm sorry for the confusion, I copied and
pasted the calculations from another size tap
and forgot to edit the numbers. I hope no
one tried to run the tap at that speed.
Aluminum 1/4"-20 Rollform
tap 1400 RPM 70 IPM
1018 HRS
Cut Tap 800 RPM 40
IPM
Aluminum 10-32 Rollform
Tap 1600 RPM 50 IPM
1018
HRS
Cut Tap 640 RPM 20
IPM
for a 1/4"-20 rollform I use a .228
drill (5.8 mm) and for
a
5/16"-18 rollform I use a .287 drill
(7.3 mm).
Drilling a blind hole to 1.100 deep
and tapping at 1.0 deep.
I use cut taps or thread mills for
the most part and use rollform taps
for the blind holes because
they don't compact chips in the bottom of
the hole.
I've never had any problems with
rigid tapping.
I copied this from an existing
program, the codes look like this. Mori SH50

tomorrow morning so if you have other questions about
tapping
or thread milling I'll answer
them when I get back.
