VADODARA: Relatives of mentally challenged persons, including children, will now have a home to leave their wards in case they have to make an emergency visit to another city. A city-based NGO has started offering a temporary residential facility for mentally challenged children. The facility will come as a major relief as parents or relatives will only have to register their child or kin at the NGO giving all the details about their child. All care would be taken to make them feel at home under the guidance of trained staffers. The NGO, Astitiva Foundation (AF), started this facility after interacting with parents of mentally challenged children. "There was a desperate need for a temporary residence for such persons in case of emergency. Parents, who had to attend a function or funeral, either had to cancel their visit or hunt for a place to leave their children. Now, they can leave them with us," said initiator of AF Jayshree Chaudhary. All that parents or kin need to do is to register with AF with all details. "It is always better to come to our centre to fill the form saving them from filling the same during emergency. The stay can be for one to three days. Presently, we can accommodate around five children or adults with all necessary facilities," added Jayshree. And, its not just residency that the foundation would offer, Jayshree added. "We have started a vocational training centre for mentally challenged above 18 years to any age. Here, they will get trained for free in making items like candles, incense sticks, greeting cards to gift boxes so that they can start small business either at our NGO or from home. Gradually, we will also work with the group as well." With the view to integrate mentally challenged persons with normal people, the foundation will also run weekend classes. "Play and learn activities like dancing, workshops on parenting, drama and drawing will also be conducted. This will offer a platform for normal people in helping special children to learn new skills and gain an insight into the problems faced by them. Those who cannot give time can help us by donating toys, books and old games which we can provide to our students," Jayshree said.
