*October 5th, 2010* * * *New Delhi*, Oct. 2: The Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) has ruled, in a recent judgment, that military service of an individual had either led to or had aggravated the condition of schizophrenia afflicting that individual.
In a judgment on the matter, the principal bench of the AFT in New Delhi ordered grant of 75 per cent disability pension from the date of discharge of military service (along with 12 per cent interest) to the petitioner, Mr Krishna Singh. According to the text of the judgment, the facts of the case were that Mr Singh developed the “mental disease” of schizophrenia in July 2003. Mr Singh had earlier been posted to the Army unit in Pokhran (Rajasthan) on March 9, 2002. He was discharged from the military service in July, 2004. The Centre had held that the schizophrenia was “neither attributable nor aggravated by military service” following which Mr Singh’s appeal (then) for grant of disability pension was rejected.
