*October 19, 2010* The Bombay high court today sought a status report of probes into all the cases of custodial death in the state since 2008.
The order passed by a division bench headed by Justice BH Marlapalle came during hearing of two PILs seeking probe of a few custodial death cases. The report is to be submitted to the court before December 1. One of the PILs deals with the death of one Robert Almeida, who died in Thane prison in 1996. The police report in 1996 had said that he was mentally ill, and "injured himself". But pursuant to a letter written to the court by a social activist, it was turned into a PIL. A judicial inquiry was eventually started, on high court's order, in 2008. It found that beating must have caused the death.
