The state is planning to start a 2-week sensitisation programme this month for paramedical staff who deal directly with psychiatric patients. The pilot project will launch at Thane Mental Hospital. The course will be a compulsory certificate course that will deal with various aspects of handling mental health patients. The employees targeted in this project will include a cross-section of nurses, officers and support staff. “We have seen that some staffers ill-treat the patients,” said Dr Sanjay Kumawat, member-secretary of Mental Health Authority.
