*6 August 2011* *KOLKATA* : A mentally challenged man tried to hack his son and wife to death with a kitchen knife late on Thursday at their Chitpore apartment and then jumped off the second floor balcony.
Police said Samiuddin Ahmed's son Ashraf and wife Azmeera raised an alarm after sustaining severe wounds. When neighbours tried to catch him, Samiuddin jumped off the balcony. All three are under treatment at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. Locals said commerce graduate Samiuddin was an accountant of a local hotel. A couple of years ago, he became a mental patient ever since he was diagnosed with an illness. tnn"He has been under treatment for the past two years," said Mohammad Sarafuddin, a local. Samiuddin had yet another of his regular fits of anger around 1 a.m. "He has been turning violent this way off and on over the past two years and was administered medicine whenever this happened,'' said a relative of Samiuddin. When Azmeera tried to give him the medicine on Thursday night too, he ran to the kitchen and picked up the scythe. Samiuddin first stabbed his son and hacked his wife when she tried to resist. Alerted by their screams, neighbours rushed in to their flat to catch Samiuddin. Noticing people, he went to the balcony and bolted its door from outside. When neighbours tried to break it, he jumped. Samiuddin sustained multiple fractures in his left leg and his condition is serious.
