*Lucknow* : Department of Geriatric Mental Health, devoted to the cause of
elderly citizens as the first speciality department in Uttar Pradesh under
Chatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical (CSM) University here, will be
celebrating its 6th foundation day tomorrow.

Working under the slogan of 'Vridhajan Hitaya and Vridhajan Sukhaya' (For
welfare of elderlies and for happiness of elderlies), the Department has won
many accolades for its unique discipline in the field of geriatrics.

Dr V M Katoch, Director General of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)
will deliver his address on the 'challenges and opportunities for the health
problems of the eldery on the occasion.

Out of 120 crore Indians, there are about 9.5 crore elderly person (60 years
or above). Research shows that more than 20 per cent of them are suffering
from one or more psychiatric problem which means that 1.9 crore are
psychiatrically ill, Dr S C Tiwari, the head of the Department of Geriatric
Mental Health said.

The Geriatric Mental Health is now recognised by Medical Council of India
and Government of India as a super specialty subject.

The Department is providing indoor and outdoor services, Healthy Aging
Clinic, Spiritual Healing Clinic, Dementia Clinic, Memory Clinic and Walk in
Clinic, State of Art Electro Convulsive Therapy (which is best in India),
Physiotherapy, EEG, ECG and Pathological Lab services are provided under one
roof to avoid any kind of inconvenience to the elderly.

The Department is also running 24 hour emergency services beside being
involved in community outreach services in different parts of the city in
collaboration with Help-age India.

Along with DM (Geriatric Mental Health), department will also provide
teaching and training on two seats of fellowship (Geriatric Mental Health)
from this academic year, said Dr Tiwari.
