*11-FEB-2012* *PUNE *: The lawyer representing state bus driver Santosh Mane (40) on Friday filed a plea before a magisterial court to shift him to the regional mental hospital for medical treatment for his mental illness.
The court of judicial magistrate first class Umeshchandra More will hear the plea on February 13. On January 25, Mane hijacked a state transport bus from the Swargate depot and drove it for 14 km around the city on a manic spree that left eight dead and 32 injured. The plea filed by Mahesh Agarwal said the mental hospital could not give a final opinion about Mane when he was kept under observation between January 28 and February 6, as the police failed to submit the documents of his previous medical treatment for mental illness. The plea states that Agarwal, after meeting Mane at the Yerawada central jail and seeking instructions from his relatives, learned that he was under the psychiatric treatment of Dr Dilip Burte of Solapur and that the jail does not have the facility to provide psychiatric treatment to Mane. The documents pertaining to Mane's medical treatment and medical bills for 2010-11 that goes on to show that he is suffering from mental illness were filed before the court. The plea reads Mane requires "antipsychotic medication" as he is suffering from life-long mental illness and was given electric shocks. The plea said Mane should be shifted to the mental hospital as the jail lacks facilities to provide treatment in such cases. Mane's behaviour was abnormal and keeping him in jail will aggravate his mental illness, it said.
