Father alleges torture in police custody 19-Dec-2012 AMBALA : A complainant in a robbery case himself ended up in hospital after being picked up by the police for questioning. It was alleged that the police not only used third degree methods, but also registered an attempt to commit suicide case against him. Sukhwinder Singh, an employee of a petrol pump at Saha in the district, had filed a complaint with the police on October 24 alleging that he had been robbed of Rs 1.37 lakh by some persons. After registering a case, the police picked him up for questioning last Sunday. From the police station, Sukhwinder had to be rushed to the Cantt Civil Hospital from where he was referred to the City Civil Hospital and from there he had to be taken to the PGI, Chandigarh, as he sustained grievous injuries on various parts of his body. Sukhwinder’s father Gurbachan Singh, a small-time farmer, said after the police failed to nab the robbers for two months, they picked up his son on the pretext that his help was needed in the investigations. He said after being taken to the police station, he had to be rushed to the hospital with physical injuries. When Gurbachan confronted the policemen who detained his son, he was told that his son had attempted suicide. He said his son was in perfect mental health and chances of his attempting suicide were bleak. He said the injuries received by Sukhwinder could not be sustained while attempting suicide. Kushal Pal, ACP, Barara, said he had received a complaint from Sukhwinder’s father and he ordered an investigation into the allegations. He said if allegations were found true, appropriate action would be taken against the guilty policemen.
