TUTICORIN : In a brutal incident, a four-year-old boy was doused with kerosene
and set on fire by his own uncle at Nazareth in Tuticorin district on Friday
evening.
The boy was rescued by his mother and admitted to a private hospital in a
critical condition. Police said that the boy was responding to treatment and
that he was out of danger now. The boy's uncle, Charuhaasan, 29 has been
arrested. The motive of the attempt to murder the boy was being interrogated,
police said.
Police said that Kathiresan, 33, working in an electrical equipment shop was
living with his wife Juliet and his four-year-old son at Vakuthankuppam village
near Nazareth. Kathiresan's brother Charuhaasan was also residing with the
family.
On Friday evening, Kathiresan was away at the electrical shop and Juliet had
left for a nearby shop leaving the boy under the care of Charuhaasan. "But
Charuhaasan doused kerosene on the boy and set him on fire. Fortunately, Juliet
had returned home within moments," a police official said. Shell-shocked at
seeing her son ablaze, she rushed to his rescue and put off the fire. Hearing
the cries of the child and the screams of Juliet, neighbours came rushing in
and nabbed Charuhaasan who attempted to flee. Dhanush was taken to a private
hospital.
Police said that they suspect a domestic dispute between Kathiresan and
Charuhaasan and it was to avenge his brother that the latter had set ablaze the
boy.
