30-Apr-2014 CHENNAI : A 31-year old Nigerian student airhostess was rescued from the street by JJ Nagar Police Inspector M Ravi and admitted to the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) in Kilpauk Medical College Hospital (KMCH), during the wee hours on Tuesday. The woman, identified as Oluchi Confidence Nwachi (31) from Abuja, Nigeria, was enrolled in an airhostess course in a Chicago-based private flying school with a regional centre in Chennai after she arrived in the city on Nov 18, 2013. She had an OP treatment receipt from the IMH and a visiting card of the flight school located in Padi. She was taken to the school, which informed the cops that her course had been terminated since she failed to adhere to the norms laid down by the school. The termination order was reportedly issued on March 18, 2014 and the information conveyed to the Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO) and the student's parents who admitted the girl had a medical history of psychological problems and was under treatment. The student reportedly stayed back without using her open ticket for the return journey and was found wandering the streets. Immigration officials suggested the school take the responsibility of sending the student back to Nigeria, but the student's mother when contacted by the school suggested her daughter be sent to the United Kingdom somehow, not back home. Citing legal issues and the lack of right to custody of the student whose course had been terminated, the school left her at JJ Nagar police station and requested the cops to take care of her until her deportation. Speaking to Express the school management said that the student's behaviour had raised doubts and attempts to reform her behaviour had failed. "We contacted her parents who revealed that she had psychological problems. We want her safe return and we cannot technically take her back since her course was terminated for her violation of school codes," a representative from the management said. The cops got her admitted to the YWCA international guesthouse on Poonamallee High Road, but received a complaint of unruly behaviour by the Nigerian national on Monday. She was produced before a Judicial Magistrate Court in Ambattur and Judicial Magistrate Shivakumar directed the cops to admit the student in the IMH and to keep her under observation for 10 days and take adequate measures to send her back to Nigeria. When contacted, IMH sources said that it was premature to comment about the mental health of the Nigerian national and the matter was subjudice.
