PORVORIM: Chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar in his Budget speech on Wednesday
announced that the universal Mediclaim scheme — Deen Dayal Swasthya Seva (DDSS)
— the tendering process for which is under way, will also cover mental illness,
ayurvedic treatement and long-term medication for chronic lifestyle diseases
such as hypertension and diabetes among other illnesses. The initial allocation
for the scheme is 30 crore.
Under the health insurance scheme, a Goan resident irrespective of his income
will be able to avail benefits, provided he has been residing in Goa for more
than five years. Overall, the Budget outlay for the health sector for 2015-16
is 701.43 crore, an increase of 169.74 crore over 2014-15.
Parsekar also declared that all works related to the new building of the South
Goa district hospital, Margao, with a capacity of 550 beds will be completed by
the next financial year-end.
