31-Mar-2015 Aditya Dev Agra: The Institute of Mental Health and Hospital (IMHH), Agra, is running without a general physician for some time now. As a result, any patient suffering from common ailments like fever, cold and cough is rushed to SN Medical College for treatment. Besides, many other posts of doctors are lying vacant in the hospital for several months now.According to sources, every day, one or two patients are brought to SN Medical College's emergency ward in an ambulance with attendants in tow. A senior doctor posted at the emergency ward said, "It is amazing that a premier institute known nationwide does not have a physician to treat common ailments of patients suffering from mental illness. It is not only a sheer wastage of manpower but also results in lots of inconvenience to patients. This practice is not good for patient's health." When contacted, IMHH's medical superintendent Dinesh Rathore downplayed the matter. "It is a specialized institute, specifically dealing with psychiatric problems. We get patients having mental illness not only from Agra, but from adjoining districts as well. What is wrong if our patients are referred to the Medical College." He added that there is no sanctioned post of physician in the hospital as of now. "We all have a doctor with an MBBS degree who can treat patients having common ailments. Only those who require some specific treatment are sent to the medical college," Rathore claimed. Besides physician, IMHH is grappling with shortage of psychiatrists at the hospital. According to information, all the four posts of associate professor in the psychiatry department are lying vacant for a long time now, while in the clinical psychology department, the lone post of reader is unoccupied. Rathore said advertisements have been placed in newspapers inviting applications and very soon, the posts would be filled. Every day, the institute sees around 300 patients in its out-patient department (OPD).
