JHARKHAND : A 27-year-old woman, who family members said was psychologically
challenged, was found trussed up, possibly gang-raped and strangled to death
near her home in Kapali in Seraikela-Kharsawan district, 15km from Jamshedpur,
on Tuesday morning.
Police have registered a case of rape and murder against unidentified people on
the basis of an FIR lodged by the victim's brother. The body has been sent to
MGM Medical College in Dimna for post-mortem.
According to the FIR, the woman went missing on Monday night and was found
stripped, hands tied up and motionless behind Al-Kabir Polytechnic, a stone's
throw from her home in densely populated Kabirnagar, Kapali, under Chandil
thana outpost, around 6.30am on Tuesday. Family members had rushed her to MGM
Medical College and Hospital in Sakchi, but she was declared brought dead.
"My sister had sneaked out of the house after dinner around 10pm (on Monday).
She was mentally ill. First, we thought she was wandering nearby, which was a
habit, and would return soon. Later, when she didn't, we looked for her
everywhere but didn't find her. In the morning, some local residents told us a
body had been found near the private polytechnic. It was hers," the victim's
brother told The Telegraph.
Referring to the condition in which the body was found, he claimed his sister
was abducted, gang-raped and then strangulated.
Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Kapali thana Bir Kumar, who inspected the site
and later spoke to family members at MGM hospital, said that preliminary
investigations suggested all three - abduction, rape and murder. "But, unless
we get confirmation in the autopsy report, we cannot say anything
conclusively," the ASI added.
On whether police were considering the piece of cloth, with which family
members said the victim's hands were tied, as vital evidence to nail the
killers, Kumar said police reached MGM hospital an hour after the woman was
brought to the emergency and did not find the same.
"Family members said the body was found in a stripped and trussed up state. We
found a mark on the neck (from strangulation), but not on the hands. Maybe, her
hands were not tied too tight to leave behind a mark. We will consider a
rape-murder case if the post-mortem report suggests so," the officer added.
