RAGHAVA M.
MANGALURU : With a treatment of nearly two-and-a-half years, those suffering
from multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) have a tendency to stop
consuming tablets midway leading to an extreme drug resistant stream of
tuberculosis. A sense of alienation also creeps among such persons.
To address this issue it has been recently decided in a meeting of district TB
control officers to take the services of a psychologist.
The psychologist would not only address the concerns of the patient but also be
of support to the family members taking care of the patient.
“We are awaiting orders from the government to start the process of selecting a
psychologist,” said Kishore Kumar, the in-charge District Tuberculosis Officer.
They will look for a Master of Social Work graduate who has medical knowledge,
Dr. Kumar added.
The need for a psychologist’s support for MDR-TB patients has gained importance
following positive reports of the initiative from New Delhi’s St. Stephen’s
Hospital.
With its mental health programme that includes psychological support, the
hospital had been able to cure nearly 400 persons of MDR-TB.
There are 74 persons undergoing treatment for MDR-TB in Dakshina Kannada since
2013 as per the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme. Under the
programme, the State government arranges for drugs for each patient.
Auxillary Nurse Midwives have been given the responsibility to ensure that each
patient follows the treatment regime and also takes the necessary nutritious
food.
As a part of the programme, the State government has set up a Directly Observed
Treatment (DOT) Centre, wherein the patient gets continued medical support
during the first few weeks of treatment after the detection of MDR-TB and
extreme TB (X-TB) cases.
One such centre has been operating from the premises of Government Wenlock
Hospital since November 28 in 2014.
