Subject: Brown University Research Fellow Studying Mental Health Care
Policy in India
To: [email protected]

Dear Vaishnaviji,

This is to follow up from our WhatsApp conversation & give a brief
description of what I've been working on thus far/my interests moving
forward research and policy-wise!

My name is Pranav and I am a research fellow from Brown University studying
health systems in the United States and India, with a specific focus on
mental health and a desire to pursue it from the angles of policy research
and analysis, as well as medical practice. I am in Delhi & Bangalore this
summer (briefly in Mumbai) for my thesis research, which is focused on
understanding two aspects of the Mental Health Care Bill (2013).

The two primary research questions are (1) What drove the creation of this
Bill at the time it emerged, and what were the contestations and inputs
that resulted in its form as tabled in 2013 in the Rajya Sabha? & (2) What
are the political and legislative bottlenecks to the passage of this Bill
since its passing through the Rajya Sabha in 2013? Alongside this, I am
looking to understand different understandings of mental health care here
in India (e.g. traditional modes of healing at dargahs and temples,
family-based care models, and unique approaches taken by NGOs), to help
situate the Bill in the context of India's broader mental health care
landscape.

I'd really appreciate your time & perspective on both issues, having worked
in the field for so long, and myself having just entered it with the goal
of engaging with it in the long term here in India.

Sincerely yours,

Pranav
