There is a pretty decent Linux Journal Article about building your own Linux

I thought they went a little overboard on the cheap side, for a few bucks more you could actually get something that would perform better and be upgradeable in the future. My current personal favorite for graphics is the ATI Radeon 8500 LE card as it has very good open source drivers with OpenGL/DRI support in X11 and you can pick up an 8500 LE with 64MB of memory for 79.00 free shipping from ATI, probably even cheaper elsewhere. There isn't a difference in cost between DDR memory and SDRAM (pricewatch best price $23 for PC133 256MB, $24 for PC2700 DDR 256MB), so go DDR for the performance. The AMD Duron 1.1 GHz may be (50) down to $28, but the AMD Athlon 1800+ is $55.00. I would probably put a few more dollars into the motherboard and try to get something that could support a future upgrade to one of the AMD Barton processors with the 333MHz front side bus for the time when they will be selling for under $100.00 and possibly even have built in SATA for the future. If the motherboard supported 8xAGP even better, as they would leave the graphics upgradeable as well.
