To Patrick, Michael and Luther:

Thanks for all your help and suggestions -- It is great to have
and active Linux community - and people are willing to help

I could bring up Xfreeconfig - and have not learned yet
how to use vim, emacs etc. So I did a forth install - this time in the expert mode. I used the generic monitor settings - and it worked.

Now of course it can't find my PCI Zoom modem which is located on com 5
but I had that problem before with SUSE - so given enough time (and effort) I'll resolve it. My Vsioner scanner is another problem
Linux doesn't like USB scanners I think?

Anyway thanks again for you help and Info.

Herman,

There appears to be a syntax error in your XF86Config file. I'm assuming
you haven't edited this yourself, so I'm guessing that something failed in
the automatic configuration during install.

You can fix this particular problem by editing /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 in your
favorite editor (vi, emacs, jove...) and giving the "DefaultDepth" parameter
in line 80 an argument. This is the "bits-per-pixel" value and you probably
want 24 for it so it should look like this:

DefaultDepth 24

That said, there's an excellent chance that there are other problems with
your configuration. I'm not a KDE (or, for that matter, Mandrake) user
myself, so I'm not exactly sure how X should be getting started in this
context. However, if no one else can suggest anything, I'd be happy to help
walk you through it over IM or IRC.

You might try configuring it yourself by executing xf86config and follow the directions. Have the following information ready:

o The name of the video card and the chip set. This can usually be found
printed on the card somewhere.

o How much memory on the video card.

o Your monitor manufacturer and brand name.
The vertical and horizontal synch rates.

I have run xf86config many hundreds of times, and by now I am intimately
familiar with it. If you can't get it to work, bring it to the
installfest on sunday afternoon and I will help you.
