Hey all,

First, I want to echo Kevin's comments on the Installfest.... if you weren't
there you missed out on a great time. :)

Second, I want to thank Dan and Cervalis (http://cervalis.com) again for
providing us a location for the install fest. We had a room with extra
monitors, keyboards, and mice and really fast net access. :) There were a
couple of hiccups getting the net started in the morning, but by noon
everything was running smoothly.

I also want to thank everyone that brought food to the event. We had a nice
array of munchies during the course of the day that kept everyone's blood
sugar high enough to solve interesting, and sometimes challenging Linux
problems.

We had 23 people in total come to the event. 27 had preregistered, a
few didn't come, and a few came who didn't preregister. Here is also a run
down of some of the items I got to be involved with. I suggest others throw
their war stories out there as well.

Oldest hardware - Pat brought in a vintage 1989 i386, which we weren't able
to attack due to a missing keyboard adapter. This will be the challenge of
Install Fest 3.

Most interesting hardware - Jim brought in an Ultra Sparc. We got Debian
running very nicely on it.

Most bizarre problem - There was a laptop whose display went in a virtical
loop (like when you loose VHOLD on your television). Every attempt to
configure with X 4 had the same problem. We found an fairly old X 3.2.1
config file via google, threw X 3 on the machine, and *viola* X came right
up.

Best piece of software if you are running Red Hat - apt-get from
freshrpms.net. We were able to use that on a machine to both update all the
RedHat 8.0 rpms on the box, as well as install alsa drivers which we were
able to use to bring up sound on the box.

Jim also brought a number of people up to speed on working on the website.
Expect some good traffic on the www mailing list soon discussing that
further.

All in all, a really great event. Watch this space for news on Install Fest
3, coming this fall to a theatre near you. ;)

        -Sean

There is no silver bullet. Plus, werewolves make better neighbors
than zombies, and they tend to keep the vampire population down.
