I'm thinking of setting up a VPS server for a django satchmo store with
slicehost or linode.
The only problem is that I don't know the amount of work needed to
maintain the system secure.
I think I will only have a webserver and database running which should
be easier to maintain then a system running many services.
I'm thinking of using http://editdns.net/ for DNS and google business
email service http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/business/index.html
I will also need to run a mailing list for store mailings. Hopefully it
will play well with google email.

How do people keep informed of security issues? I know there are
security mailing lists out there. Do you know of any that you can select
only the software being used on your system? What would be awesome and
maybe is already out there, is to get security info automatically, based
on the packages installed. I know there is a pop up thing on *ubuntu
gnome/kde/xfce but I don't know if something like that exists for a
server without X window
A quick google search did not return any results.

Maybe I could make apt-get run from cron every 12hours but if the
install messes up I won't know if everything is working. Or maybe I can
get email notifications from failures. Or maybe there is a better
software package to manage this out there

Any ideas and tips on how to keep a system updated with the minimum
amount of work is appreciated :o)
Unfortunately Its been a while since I was able to attend to a LUG meeting.
I missed most of the LUG security related meetings...

Does anyone have exerience with linode?
I appreciate any other ideas and suggestions anyone might have

Thanks
Orion
