Linode rocks! I've been with them for over two years and I know a bunch of
other LUG people have been with them for a while. They are easily the best
hosting company I've ever worked with.
As far as your DNS server, I would actually recommend using the DNS services
offered by Linode. Their DNS manager is pretty full featured and their
servers seem pretty solid.

For the google email hosting, I've had very positive experiences with it.
Be sure to think for a while and make sure that you are comfortable with
Google having access to/control over your email. Similarly depending on
your specific needs and goals you might want to check out Google Groups (
http://groups.google.com) before setting up a listserv. Again you loose a
bit of control but you also let a ton of admin headaches be somebody else's
problem.

In regard to updating your server, you might find the post at
http://www.vanutsteen.nl/2008/06/09/unattended-upgrades-on-a-ubuntu-hardy-server/interesting.
It describes some of Ubuntu Server Edition's built in update
tools. As with any automatic update tools they can cause problems by
updating things which your not expecting to have change, but they also can
go a long way to preventing your server from getting owned.

Finally, as a bit of a side note, be sure to do some research on optimizing
your setup for the relatively low memory limits which exist in VPS
environments. The generally recommended deployments for Django and Satchmo
can be pretty memory intensive, but can be tweaked to have much lower memory
profiles.
