They could just as easily release the code under a closed-source model if they 
so chose. It's easily done and doesn't cost $20K to do. But they choose not to, 
for whatever reason (some for technical reasons, some for moral ones, the why 
doesn't matter).

If you release your code under a permissive license, you have to be willing to 
accept that folks might (gasp!) use it, redistribute it, repackage it, etc., 
etc.   If you don't want them doing that, feel free to use a tighter license.

"We want everyone to be able to make use of this code... just not MICROSOFT."   
That's the hypocrisy I can't stomach.
