We have had these discussions before, we have evolved in to more of a
GNU/FOSS group then a pure Linux group. When Sean founded the LUG back 8
years there was a definite need for a Linux support group. Back in those
days we pack the room during an install fest installing a lot of computers.
Now as was said with Ubuntu there is not much need for "install parties". So
we have evolved and have taken a more pragmatic approach and focused on
talks that focus on solving a problem, and moved away from "distro
shootouts". There is the issue of the name, but with 8 years in the brand,
why change now?

So my efforts are focused on spinning off STEM ( Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math http://mhvlug.org/content/hvstem ) in to it's
own independent web site. The idea is to promote all local groups and thus
dive the synergy between groups to make each stronger
without duplicating effort. I think and hope another outcome will be for the
included groups and possibly new groups to serve the need that is mentioned
in this thread. The idea is for us a LUG to keep our identity and allow the
ACM to provide the deeper topics. As needs form they can be serviced by the
community that is interested and in need, thus as
http://squidwrench.org/ formed
last year out of the need.

Thus the STEM spin-off will begin to occur after I get back from my month
in Europe, I invite everyone to participate who wants to.
