Toughs on last nights meeting "Getting Involved in Open Source"

We had an amazing talk and turn out last night, with 37 filling the room at
our new location at Vassar.
My highlights:

* If you don't have one get a github (https://github.com/) ID, it can tell
prospective employers what you have worked on. The new center of OSS on the
internet.
* Besides the “Google” one can go to Stackoverflow (
http://stackoverflow.com/ ) for knowledge.
* Read a LOT of source code that you did not write.
* Code is about people, dealing with code also means dealing with other
programmers.
* If your going to get involved make sure there is a “passion” or “drive”
because you will be making some level of commitment.

Thank you to Sean Dague for such an insight full talk!
So I recommend that everyone make a new years resolution to make 2012 the
year they do something in Open Source!
Don't procrastinate about what is the best language or architecture style,
etc Pick a programming project and “JUST TO IT!”

After the talk, I discussed our “study group ideas”. I was not aware that
there was a large portion of people that did not know that IRC is still
alive and well.
It is one of the tools that I use to get ask questions that I yet can't
describe to Google. Also most of the core LUG members hang out in the
#mhvlug chat room
( on chat.us.freenode.net/6697 ) most work days from 9 to 5. It's not
technical all the time and it can be a refreshing distraction during the
work day
( for a few minutes that is ).

Just point your web-browser to:

If you want a real IRC program I would recommend X-Chat:
Linux: xchat is in your repo, just install it already!
MS Windows: http://xchat.org/download/
If before Snow Leopard “XChat aqua”
http://sourceforge.net/projects/xchataqua/
If Snow Leopard and above “XChat Azure”
