Never made my own theme and only dabbled with WordPress but one I liked even with all its quirks, Suffusion http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/suffusion
You can pick colors and make it your own where I found many other themes had limited options or none at all. I understand that doing the theme with no options probably is easier and mah look better but if you have a particular company color you don't want to have to chuck awesome themes because you can't make them your own without editing it manually which prevents easy updates. Also a field to enter custom CSS that overrides the themes is nice and much better than having to edit it manually. SEO field is a cool feature as well. My thoughts are people use WordPress because they don't have a developer which means allowing them to easilh change things like header colors, body colors, adding sidebars, etc is good. The drop down menu in Suffusion is terrible looking, having more than one drop down menu would be cool but likely increase complexity. Matt
