In GNOME Shell (GNOME 3), if you drag a window to the side of
the display then the window will automatically resize to fit on half of
the workspace.
I recently started using a widescreen monitor at work. I like to use
the Three Columns layout in Claws Mail and the Wide View in Liferea.
