As some of you are aware, I have temporarily put my Android

I have a current need to master Python in under 6 months do to work

I like most invested in "Learning Python" ( with 2nd ed. one of my
fav. programming books )
But the 4th ed. is almost 400 pages and a monster of a tome, still a
very good read.
What I came across is "Thinking Python"
http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920025696.do
It's shorter, more focused and about learning to program as much as
it's about Python.
But what I wanted to point out is what Allen Downey does is VERY
FOSS/Linux-ey
He published the book on the internet and you can download it, in PDF,
LaTeX source code or even HTML.

You can check out his other "Creative Commons" books at

This is a great resource for Computer teachers! both High School and
Collage level.
I have seen a lot of people recommend Learn Python The Hard Way, It's
online and should also be pretty good.

Dive Into Python is also available online but some people in freenode
#python recommend against it http://www.diveintopython.net/
