If you have to run a Windows application that can't be used under Wine. I have this problem with LeapFrog Connect (a toy management utility, http://www.amazon.com/review/R3PUKEQVAFP535/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm) Of course, I run it inside a VM, as I never leave Windows as the host-OS on my home systems. But since Win8's UI is normally such a disaster to use without touch, you might as well hack it so it behaves in your VM environment.
Granted, I'd be using XP or a super-cheap Win7 Basic (if they made such a thing) in *my* VM. Still have another 16 months before MS drops support for XP, and it will be a little while past that before anything I need to run under it drops XP support. After that, hopefully USB support in Wine will be working.
