The first part if you go to tools - options - load and save - general.
There are two drop downs one for the document type the second for the
format that a document should default to save in.  This stops you from
having to do save as and you can just use save which will default to xls.
There is also a checkbox to suppress the warning that you are saving in a
closed format.   You are correct in that I can't read an ods with an
android.  Never tried as I typically save in office formats since many
people wouldn't know what an ods is.  As for if your install is broken
maybe?  I can press save as and get a full list of document formats on mint
and windows installs.  Can't help with the formula question though.
