Compatibility issues between different Office versions does happen and is
annoying but the goal isn't to have complete compatibility but enough to
keep you buying the latest version. Problems with other word processors
exist like Word Perfect and MS Works (go figure) so not just a
Open/LibreOffice thing. But to be fair I remember reading even Open Office
has had trouble following the standards they created for their formats.
Also it probably does get annoying to call the Helpdesk to get another
converter installed just to read an application or the easier route of
"into the waste bin with you" (though Office 2010 should be able to read
odf). Personally with Office 2013 retail being tied to a computer with no
ability to move that license later to another computer I am testing
LibreOffice with Office formats set as default save. Then when kids forget
to save as Office formats on their home computer it will be transparent
anyway (so many kids have LibreOffice installed). Like most things if you
stack one side with enough quantity no matter how you still win :-)
