In the abstract on the learning thing, I agree with you. But the couple of hours is less than it often takes to post your problem on a web site and get some feedback. It depends on whether you have a report due in the morning or if your system is the one that your clerical person makes appointments and does bookkeeping on. If it is, you might not have the time to start geeking around.

By comparison, reinstalling XP and doing all of the updates will probably be weekend long experience. About a day for Windows 7. Don't get me started on Windows 8, I call it "The Ubuntu marketer".

Maybe, but you also don't learn as much doing this than fixing the specific
thing that's broken. [I consider reinstallation as a general all-around
solution to problems to be "a bad habit".]

Subject: [mhvlug] Recommended Distros for Windows & Linux Repairs?

Was asked this Question: What is the best Linux Distro for Windows &
Linux Repairs?

I have no idea so thought best to post.

Appreciate any recommendations of distros that you have found useful.
I don't know about "best", but what I usually use is Knoppix. [I've tried
other Linux LiveCD distros but for some reason I never like any of them as
much as I like Knoppix.] Last time I was at an IEEE meeting discussing
Windows malware and repair/recovery using Linux, the speaker at the time also
used Knoppix for this as well.
