I know you've gotten a lot of responses already from people who (unlike me) 
understand what's going on. I also know you are now pursuing LibreCAD. You 
mentioned that you've seen lots of comments on other boards regarding this 
problem. Perhaps there's one angle you didn't pursue. Did you search: 
draftsight ubuntu "64-bit"? Here's a thread that looks promising (involving
