Quite often charger cables either:

a) Don't have data pins at all.  That extra copper is expensive, you
know!

b) Short the data pins together and contain other magic for indicating
it's a high-current charger so that the phone goes into speed charging
mode.

I use an adapter cable from amazon
(http://www.amazon.com/Mediabridge-USB-Charging-Adapter-A-Female/dp/B009W34XMM/)
specifically for this purpose, because the phone charges many times
faster.
