This can be caused by a defective or miswired cable. Note that it's
normal for the LED to *blink* off when sending, but it shouldn't *stay*
off.
Also be careful about conflicts between the SANA-II driver and the MNI
driver if you use the latter. If you use the SANA-II driver an dthen
switch to the MNI driver, you *must* expunge the former with an "avail
flush" or equivalent.

Yes (the term is "crossover cable"), but if you plan to have more machines
in the near future you're probably better off going to the hub right away,
since it avoids confusing differently-wired cables, and the LEDs on the
hub are helpful. The only downside is that you can't use full-duplex with
a hub, but that only has a significant impact if you're transferring data
between machines in both directions simultaneously.

But does it actually work, or simply not make the LED go out?
Since you're talking about hubs and crossover cables, you're presumably
trying to use 10BaseT. That means the "10BASET" setting is theoretically
correct, but should be optional since the card is supposed to autodetect
which interface is being used. I don't know exactly how it does that, but
I recommend *not* putting a terminator in the BNC if you're using the
RJ-45.
