Just wanted to add my two cents in here. I've got a (fast) windows98
machine sitting in my house, turned on, plugged into the lan waiting to
be used. I can't stand the damn thing. You have to re-boot it to change
or add DNS servers, or any other basic network configuration.
Installing most any software requires a reboot and windows is so
notorius for trashing the registry that periodic harddrive reformats are
normal just to get back to a basic, 'clean' configuration.
I kept a linux box booted for 299 days. The power died for longer than
my UPS could handle, so I had to shut it down. During that time I
upgraded apache twice, samba three times, and named once. Changed from
a 'fake' 10.0.0.x network to real IP addresses, and various other
reconfigs. Never rebooted once.
I'm luck to keep the windows machines at work up overnite without a
crash or a re-boot.
Not to mention browsing with IE 4 sucks, and IE 5 is even worse. And Mr.
Bill came came up with the innovative idea that using windows explorer on
our local machines should resemble web browsing.
The grass may look greener on the other side, but that's 'cause they've
spray painted the weeds.
