On a point-to-point link, the "gateway" is *the* IP address of the other
end of the link, whether it's actually a gateway to anywhere or not. On
an Ethernet, you should only define a gateway if there really is a gateway
machine.

The same would be true on the Mac if you were using VLink instead of
nullser.
